What is gnawing these rocks?

For a good chunk of one of today’s climbs we kept seeing rocks that appear to have been gnawed (many much more than in this picture). Horses are mainly grazed here. A naturally occurring salt lick?
Dragon’s breath
After some more time in the mountains we dropped down to Pamplona for a couple of nights. Someone decided it’s Christmas.
