The storm before the calm

June 10, 2025Bimbling Sam

I write this post from a room in The Old Infirmary in Worcester where we have spent the last few days getting ready for the off. I planned to write it a while ago, whilst in the thick of passing our possessions on to others, but that process was so all-consuming, I didn't get chance.

This is a phase in our lives that I've taken to referring to as "The storm before the calm". Hopefully this will be the case and when we relax into our cycling journey all the hard work will have been worth it. In fact, to some degree, we have been working towards the point of us each only having worldly possessions weighing ~50kg for a long while. Me especially, as I was a very long way off that goal to start with.

Aside from the house, which we sold to fund this trip, we gave all of our possessions away. We chose to do this for many reasons. Not least to make it easier for us than it would've been if we'd tried to sell everything. It took us two months of solid work just to give them away. It would've been much easier to get a sell some bits to pay for a big skip and then get a house clearance company in to sort the rest. Who knows if one day we will regret what we have done, but I doubt we will. It has been great to see stuff go to some really nice folk, and aside from the warm glow, we also get the total freedom that comes with this transition. Our aim was to leave with as much flexibility as possible to settle elsewhere (in whatever form) as possible. Weirdly, it only occurred to me very recently that doing what we've done is an unusual, radical even, step.

Aside from radical, this process was both thorough and time consuming...and often very bloody tedious. It included lots of sorting and a broad variety of ways of giving stuff away, including donating to charities, hackspaces and individuals. I've decided to show this through the series of captioned photos below.

Musical machines and many musical instrument parts filling a room
[[Before]] My workshop / studio - although I have to admit that this is already with a lot of stuff gone.
An armchair in front of a bookshelf full of books
Freecycling individual items was a regular occurrence. Bye bye reading chair.
Large grey plastic box tucked behind the hedge just off a drive
Freecycling was often done by leaving stuff in this box by the drive as we didn't have time to chat with everyone
Box of Fischertechnik on the drive with a handwritten note inside, explaining that it's free to take
We also had a 'stall' of Free Stuff on the front of our drive for many weeks.
Man stood in garage with hands on a box of items
Some Freecyclers came round many times to grab a variety of items
Four people arm in arm, smiling at the camera in front of a large removals lorry
Some Freecyclers took even more items
Camp bed and various boxes in a room with quarry tile floor and timber beams
After which point we only had our camp bed to sleep on. Better get used to it!
Two people on an e-cargo bike with a trailer full of bags.
Some friends visited and took stuff away. Here's Graham Dunning with a trailer full of stuff.
Hire van with three women in, waving
Other friends turned up in a van to take a load of items. Karina, Sarah and Lia fetched all manner of stuff.
Silver tuba on a tuba stand with a tuba case behind
...including my tuba
acoustic modular system on a table with pipes and wires
...and my acoustic modular synth, designed and built for my PhD.
Silver van with side door open and piano inside
Our piano even squeaked into Lars' van
Various colourful mechanical musical instruments in the back of a panel van
My pal Bear Kenchington paid a visit, played a gig and left with more stuff than they arrived with
Large drawer unit with drawers out and various sorted components in containers on the floor.
My friend Kathy Hinde was a great help. Taking items herself and organising for stuff to go to Bristol Hackspace.
Large stack of black milk crates next to wall with gravel underneath
Some other harder to home items were taken by other friends, such as Katie taking these crates for den making
Selfie of me and Beck and my mum in a house with timber frames
My mum visited and took some bits away
Selfie with Beck and Ahmed outside a church.
We delivered some other items ourselves. Like some camera gear to Asylum Link Merseyside.
Stack of PA speakers in studio with shelves in.
...and some music gear to my childhood friend Grinner, in Cornwall
Beck standing in the street with a scythe.
Any items we had borrowed were returned
Man on bike towing a trailer, with a yellow rain jacket on
Once we'd finished our charity runs and delivering any larger items, our mate Rob came over to grab his new e-cargo bike and trailer
Empty room
[[After]] The studio(s), house, garage and shed were eventually empty...

All that remains now is for us to set off on our world cycle tour with our bikes and our other remaining possessions!

Four panniers (two large and two small) combined into a big block using the straps
One bike's worth of luggage in our panniers, packed as a test for loading onto a FlixBus in Rotterdam
