Sights (and sounds) of Norway in one day

Norway just keeps on giving!

We think we’ve been wowed enough but every climb and turn greets us with another amazing sight or sound.

As an example, today we started out early because we knew there was a section on the main E134 from Røldal which was really busy yesterday as we arrived and also because the forecast was for high temperatures later in the day. Setting off at 6:45 we started the climb (which turned out to be our biggest yet with 660 metres of ascent) on the main road before a short diversion onto an ‘old road’ to avoid a tunnel. Bikes and pedestrians aren’t permitted in some tunnels (and they’re pretty horrible, loud, narrow and smelly), so alternative routes or means of transport are provided. We’ve been using the fantastic resource of Map of Norwegian Tunnels, thank you to all the contributors.

The old roads are often steep but they are almost always worth the effort. Here are a selection of sights from our old road adventures today.

A red hut sits on the edge of a hill with a vast mountainous view behind it.
A house looks over our climb from the valley
Beck rides a fully loaded touring cycle up a hill with snow-topped mountains in view behind.
It’s always worth the effort.
Sam stands with his touring cycle at the top of a climb with a snow-capped mountains in view.
A casual view of a glacier from the top…
A narrow tarmac road zig-zags down a hill towards a lake
There’s always a down… in this case 30km of down. This was an amazing descent that felt just for us.
A huge waterfall with spray tumbles down a mountainside
Stumbled upon Låtefoss falls beside the road to Odda. There were so many people stood in the road, three traffic officers were there to slow and manage vehicles around tourists. The sound and spray were incredible.
A glacier at the top of a mountain viewed across a calm lake.
The Folgefonna glacier viewed across Sandvevatnet as we entered Odda.

And some shutters that Sam liked… Less awe-inspiring but cute nonethelesss.

A green wooden house with red windows and shutters
Yeah. Shutters.

Finally, one other memorable sound from today, which is the only sense in which we really enjoy tunnels, was the racket made by a chopper motorbike passing through the Lausasteintunnelen. Sounded like the gates of hell.
