Norway just keeps on giving!
We think we’ve been wowed enough but every climb and turn greets us with another amazing sight or sound.
As an example, today we started out early because we knew there was a section on the main E134 from Røldal which was really busy yesterday as we arrived and also because the forecast was for high temperatures later in the day. Setting off at 6:45 we started the climb (which turned out to be our biggest yet with 660 metres of ascent) on the main road before a short diversion onto an ‘old road’ to avoid a tunnel. Bikes and pedestrians aren’t permitted in some tunnels (and they’re pretty horrible, loud, narrow and smelly), so alternative routes or means of transport are provided. We’ve been using the fantastic resource of Map of Norwegian Tunnels, thank you to all the contributors.
The old roads are often steep but they are almost always worth the effort. Here are a selection of sights from our old road adventures today.
And some shutters that Sam liked… Less awe-inspiring but cute nonethelesss.
Finally, one other memorable sound from today, which is the only sense in which we really enjoy tunnels, was the racket made by a chopper motorbike passing through the Lausasteintunnelen. Sounded like the gates of hell.
