We arrived into Nador on the 20th January. On the very first day of our cycling adventure here, the 21st January, I took my first photo of a Moroccan football pitch.
The first of many… [click to view as gallery]
Perched on the edge of a village beside a school, I was drawn to the goalposts which had been erected on an extremely sloping piece of ground. It appeared to be not wholly conducive to a good game of football but I appreciated the effort of putting in some infrastructure for kids to play. Despite me having very little interest in football or football pitches, this first photo started the ball rolling on a little project…
This post features images of only football pitches but don’t let that put you off if you’re not a fan of the ‘beautiful game’. Some of the landscapes we found ourselves (and completely deserted, remote football pitches) in are pretty noteworthy.
Here’s a whistle-stop tour of Moroccan football pitches we’ve encountered on our travels.
31/01/2026 Imouzzer Kandar
Notes: An impressively tidy and new pitch with ball net. In a very rural area with widely spaced and scattered houses with no real village centre.
05/02/2026 El Ksiba
Notes: Good location on the edge of a little village. Ground conditions leave much to be desired.
05/02/2026 Foum el Anser
Notes: Great location at the centre of the village. Placed on the market/Souk square so will be unusable once a week and probably a few days after if the rubbish is anything to go by
12/02/2026 Ouzoud
Notes: A rustic but functional pitch on the edge of a hamlet although it’s right at the top of a long hill. Lovely views across the valley to the old mud-brick homes.
13/02/2026 Ait Majden
Notes: Found in one of the most remote villages we travelled through which was only access by a dirt road. Tucked into the valley, this was the only flat piece of ground beside the river. The sticks do the job and it looks well used.
15/02/2026 Abadou
Notes: A bit of a scramble to get up to it but on the edge of the village, a game was in full flow.
15/02/2026 Touama
Notes: A little way out of town but a great facility with a club house and amazing views of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains
15/02/2026 Touama
Notes: Another rural set-up. This one included a team of grazing sheep and the lady was collection herbs/plants from the pitch
16/02/2026 Iguerferouane
Notes: A really lively village with lots of schools and school children. It’s a shame the goalpost has gone the same way as the fence in the background.
16/02/2026 Ourika
Notes: In the middle of nowhere (see location link below). A 30min steep hike-a-bike from the closest tiny village to the pitch. The most spectacular of views of the Atlas Mountains.
Location of football pitch with view of the Atlas Mountains, near Ourika Valley. The Google Maps point shows that kids are using it!
16/02/2026 Ourika
Notes: Although the net has seen better days, at least it has one. Stunning views of the Atlas Mountains and only a short-ish walk from a cluster of houses.
20/02/2026 Imlil
Notes: At an altitude of around 2050 metres above sea level, this was the pitch with the highest elevation we came across. It was an effort to get to from the main village of Imlil but worth it for that view.
The pin on Google Maps for this one also features loads of photos of it in use. Fabulous!
20/02/2026 Imlil
Notes: Found in the main village of Imlil on the edge of Toubkal National Park. Triple purpose as a pitch, market square and car park. Looks like someone wasn’t looking where they were driving.
Another interesting pin for this pitch. Imlil and the Atlas Mountains suffered a terrible earthquake in 2023. This pitch (as a flat area) was commandeered immediately after the earthquake and temporary accommodation was established here which can still be seen on Google Maps.
21/02/2026 Ouirgane
Notes: A lakeside location right next to the school in Ouirgane. A beautiful view but high risk of losing the ball in the water
Notes: On the banks of the Oued N’Fis in the tiny village of Imgdal. Lorries and material from the quarry behind have occupied some of the pitch. Temporary accommodation following the earthquake has been erected on the opposite bank
22/02/2026 Tachguelte
Notes: A beautifully painted set of goalposts set with a net too. Spectators can settle down on an uncomfortable-looking bench
22/02/2026 Tachguelte
Notes: A substantial pitch for what appeared to be a tiny population. Housing adjacent looked to be emergency housing possibly for residents affected by the 2023 earthquake. Comfortable bench for spectators.
22/02/2026 Oued-Aissa
Notes: A rustic pitch conveniently on the edge of a village. Spectacular view. Even more rustic ‘green gym’ available in same location.
24/02/2026 Taroudant
Notes: Several football pitch options on offer here. Adjacent to the city with great views of the ancient city walls
24/02/2026 Oulad Brahim
Notes: A flat and well-conditioned pitch. Difficult to tell if the fence is to keep people or sheep out or children and balls in
25/02/2026 Oulad Teima
Notes: Surprisingly far from the road. Working nets. Small goalposts available for little players
25/02/2026 Oulad Teima
Notes: Great location in the village. Innovative use of car tyres as goal posts
25/02/2026 Tamallalt
Notes: Sandy pitch with lots of opportunities for slipping over. Very rural and down a dusty and muddy track away from the small village
05/03/2026 Agadir
Notes: A sophisticated pitch in the city of Agadir. Well-kept and within a complex of other sports pitches. Interesting colour scheme
05/03/2026 Agadir
Notes: Substantial, new and smart football pitch in Agadir. Part of the sports complex area on the south of the city. A little away from the main population but a sports ‘venue’
05/03/2026 Agadir
Notes: An informal football pitch in use. Concrete posts make acceptable goalposts. An exciting and energetic game
09/03/2026 Sidi Bidi
Notes: A rusty goalposts marks the village football pitch. Priority given to parking dune buggies by the local business
09/03/2026 Tifnit
Notes: Nice pitch and set of painted goalposts. Inconvenient row of rubble piles along the halfway line makes a game tricky
10/03/2026 Massa
Notes: A sandy pitch in the beautiful setting of the Massa Valley. Industrial infrastructure to admire if that’s your jam. Games will probably be interrupted by people using this route on foot and scooter
10/03/2026 Toulou
Notes: Excellent location right in the centre of the village and outside the school. No goalposts but convenient and plenty of spots for spectators
10/03/2026 Mirleft
A rural pitch next to a major road but with a 20min walk from the village. Beautiful wildflower meadows and views of hills and the sea to distract you from the football.
10/03/2026 Mirleft
Notes: A seaside pitch beside the village. Smaller goalposts for smaller children to give the game a go
17/03/2026 Tarfaya
Notes: Located in the tiny town of Tarfaya in the northern part of the Sahara. A substantial pitch and spectator area near to the main port
21/03/2026 Laayoune
Notes: Great location in a newly built district and frequently used (though not on this occasion). Interesting use of materials for marking the goals. May need to regularly clear rubbish in the windy city of Laayoune
22/03/2026 Laayoune
Notes: A dramatic city-centre setting beside the new cultural centre being developed. Part of a large complex with lots of sports opportunities. Watered grass in the middle of the desert. No people using it on the weekend.
Then there’s me. Taking photos of random football pitches.
And even me pointing at other people’s photos of football pitches.
