A Gallery: Senegalese Cows

Before we get on to our Senegal overview - a place I found to be chaotic, culturally invigorating and incredibly varied - it’s time to bring you our next country gallery.

This is one that I’ve been looking forward to publishing for a long time! For those who know me well, my favourite animal is the cow, so I was utterly delighted when we started seeing hand-drawn and painted cows everywhere, indicating a store selling Nekh sow. This is a very popular sweetened curdled milk that is used in a number of dishes (again, for those who know me, they’ll remember that milky/creamy things are not my favourite…).Various spellings of this food exist as you’ll see in these photos. ‘Neex Soow’ appears to be the ‘official spelling’ but Wolof—the most widely spoken language in Senegal—is predominantly oral and so there are many variations.

Anyway, here’s my collection of some of the best and most entertaining Senegalese cows. The final image is the one that greeted us on the wall of the wonderful apartment we stayed at in Dakar - it was meant to be!
